The Archbishop Stepinac High School community mourns the passing of Sr. Mary Robert Bernet, OSF. Sr. Robert was a teacher of Religious Studies for nearly two decades at our school. She was the living embodiment of Jesus Christ’s teaching: Whatsoever you do for the least of my people that you do unto me. Her words and deeds were always guided by her strong devotion to God. Students and staff were inspired by the simple image of Sr. Robert sitting daily in the chapel looking up at the crucifix quietly praying for our school community. This simplicity was also a hallmark of her character. In a world of plenty, Sr. Robert demonstrated you only need the simple virtues of faith, hope, and love to lead a meaningful rich life.Among her countless students, Sr. Robert was also known for her class notebooks. Neat and ordered with specific instructions even to the placement of a staple, the notebooks became one of Sr. Robert’s signature teaching tools. They taught organization, planning, good penmanship, and responsibility. She would spend countless hours into the early morning hours (often losing sleep) reviewing all her students’ notebooks with unmatched devotion. The care she gave to those notebooks spoke volumes of the care with which she held each student’s understanding of scripture. For through Scripture, Sr. Robert said, God’s love for each of her students was revealed. Scripture became a refuge for her students during the difficult adolescent years.
In Les Misérables, Victor Hugo exclaims: “To love another person is to see the face of God.” Sr. Robert saw God in each of her students. And undoubtedly, they saw God in her. May she rest in eternal peace.
The Archbishop Stepinac community prays for the consolation of her sister, Sr. Mary Clare Bernet, OSF and her family and friends and the countless people Sr. Robert touched and inspired through her years of religious service.
